2013 Gathering Reflections

OMG!!!! I may have planned this event, but nothing (and I do mean nothing) could have prepared me for just how excellent it was. Obviously, I played a part in the whole event, but let me tell you it was only through the harmony of all who attended and participated in the events that made it soar.
I got to meet the famous Opie MacLeod, and was more impressed by him than at any time I talked with him on the forums (across multiple boards). I FINALLY got my chance to have a full conversation with Sith Realist Miles (of whom had come to my wedding, but I didn't get a whole lot of time with him :( - I made sure to amend that issue this time around). Miles teamed up with a man I sponsored to knighthood to teach a sword class, what little I got to see of it, it was beautifully taught. Sensei Ross of the Chicago Jedi got really involved with teaching his defensive martial arts class, it was excellent to see everyone mix together and learn. In that session, I was able to work with Jared Avery Michaels (author of From Nerd to Knight). The Shamanic Journey with Angelus/Gabriel Calderon- we'll get to that one in a minute! XD!!! My introduction to Locutions was probably the best class I have ever done- because I was able to get people involved with facilitation and didn't make it nearly as long as the other five classes I've delivered unto the spiritual community. I got to teach my favorite sensing class to a journalist from the UK, one on one. We had a surprise guest (a friend of Jareds) show up on site and he helped a lot of people learn to expand their feeling of energy around them. That was really awesome. Andy's Blot (Viking Ceremony) was fun, and I got to see a side of Andy in that ceremony that I had yet seen. It was good to see him getting in touch with his ancestry, and really get involved in everything he did. And finally, I underwent three Jedi Trials: Spirit, Courage and Knowledge. The other two, well I've faced them time and time again, I know where I stand in that.
The Trial of Spirit is one that I wrote, but Gabe put me through it. Because of the nature of that trial, well I can't tell any of you in the event you ever find yourself on the end of it. Can't let you cheat that one ;). But the Trial of Courage was inducted on Saturday Night. Let me tell you a bit about that one.
A couple of months ago I went to Gabe (Gabe and I are slowly but surely putting together a book that will be passed solely down the Jedi Mystic lineage, starting with me and him, we are looking at another member of the community to induct into this group now) and asked him to create a shamanic journey that would introduce someone to their deepest fear. I told him that he could experiment on me until he got it right, because I (at this point) didn't have a clue what my fear was- despite multiple attempts to figure it out. So Gabe came up with a shamanic journey to present at this year's gathering. And man, I started to think it wasn't going to work. Maybe for the rest of the group, but we probably needed an alternative. Then he started bringing us out of the shamanic journey. He was executing it beautifully, but I was going deeper. "Great," I thought, "just great, now I'm going to need someone to pull me out!" as I got deeper and deeper, though, I couldn't move. I couldn't speak. As Gabe started getting feedback, I tried calling out to him. I was paralyzed in every aspect of the word- save mental thought. And this scared the **** out of me, and at the same time, I was excited because IT WORKED, my God, GABE PULLED IT OFF ON THE FIRST ATTEMPT! Weirdest feeling ever, and I was loving every second of it. Finally, I managed to get enough of my paralysis out of the way to call out to him vocally. To me that symbolized that I could do it on my own if I worked hard enough, which is all I needed. But Gabe came over and pulled me from the depths. Man I gave him a hug and said "Gabe, you succeeded, that's our Trial of Courage".
And the food- MY GOD THE FOOD!!! My younger sister, Crystal Benton, did a fabulous job cooking for the event. You have no idea. We cheated on Friday night, Baked Lasgna and Garlic Toast. Saturday morning Crystal made an entire Japanese Breakfast for 18 people, and I got to dress up in a full Kimono for the morning event (which also included a Japanese Tea Ceremony demonstration with Sensei Ross dressed for the part). Dinner that night was Mashed Potatoes, Green Beans and Chicken Breast. Sunday Night dinner, oh George R.R. Martin would have been proud, as we made the ENTIRE meal from recipes out of the Official Game of Thrones Cookbook, and I got to wear a medieval outfit for the entire half of that day for my knighting.
I had a lot of people come to me and tell me how much fun they had, that I did a great job. But I honestly believe the highest paid compliment came from a man which attended the gathering for the purpose of writing a story about who we as a community are:

My shamanic journey hosted by Angelus
Angelus led a workshop of a Shamanic Journey about 15 minutes ago and I'm trying to journal it before everything leaves my mind.
We were asked to bring three rocks we found outside. I got two regular rocks from the drive way and one that is a statue of a rabbit.
we started with a fire breathing method. It consisted of two breaths in through the nose and one out the mouth. We continued and got deeper into out relaxation with Gabe counting down.
The first thing he ask us to do is think of a opening into the earth. I pictured myself in the gift shop and entered into the stairs towards the bottom of the cave. As I was getting deeper in I pictured myself going into the throat of a bear.
We were asked to look around and seeing what was on the side and notice everything around. Then we were pulled deeper into the cave by a unseen force. I pictured I was going through a Doctor Who like Time Tunnel and the cave were looking with a hue of red as if I was going through Hell.
I reached the middle of the cave and I saw a pink blossomed rose that looked glass like.
Gabe asked us to cast one of the stones and see it transform into something that bothered you. It came out as a green smoke it released very strongly. I took this to be my fear of my money situation being very cloudy.
The next rock was to be a time when we felt like power was used or abused us. I thought of my boss who has been not giving me that many hours at work. But to be honest I would complain even if they gave me a lot of hours. I never seem to be happy. Maybe my abuse of power is actually me complaining.
The last rock was to represent something that bothers me. I pictured my stone turning into a a big "X" meaning that it I am bothered by things that try to stop me.
Gabe said that all these things are now going to be on fire and burn to ashes. I pictured this and saw a owl popping out the ashes and winked at me as we finished the journey.

Sometimes the energy of the Gathering can be a bit overwhelming and for some it is something they want to continue on for just a little bit longer. Either way I have found that a bit of time to "decompress" before heading home is the best way to end a gathering. We decided to spend it up at Galtingburg a tourist area of East TN. My traveling group ofAimee Becker and Lightning Strike was joined by Heartland Jedi Andy Spalding and Crystal Benton. Chicago Jedi Gabriel Calderon Ross Greenberg and Bulldog join us for a few hours after the gathering to enjoy some weapons shopping at Smoky Mountain Knifeworks. That place is spectacular!! We really hated to part ways with Chicago but we know we will see each other again soon. I am really looking forward to it.
We spent some time getting to know the area and playing tourist. We got to visit the Ripleys Aquarium and walked around the area. Crystal and I stayed and explored the town while the rest went out for a hike. I had a feeling that they needed some bonding time especially in a natural environment.
Crystal and I went on to play at a 5D motion theater shooting game. I got high score on all of the challenges. So if you're ever in trouble with a bunch of computer generated cowboys and pirates.. THIS is the the guy you call.
When we parted ways from HEARTLAND JEDI after a hotel breakfast and headed to a store that sold trippy Bohemian stuff call Earthbound Trading Co. We really enjoyed this place and found some good sales on stuff here. I bought a Himalayan Salt Rock Lamp, Buddhist Singing Bowl and a Acupuncture statue. Great buys I got for about $75.
Gabe's shamanic journey brought me a image of entering the earth from a gift shop. This reminded me of Luray Caverns in VA. I convinced my companions to join me along for a detour. I told them about what I saw and I really think I am meant to go there. Needless to say it didn't take too much convincing.
One of my plans when I leave the state is to try out some eating places that I haven't been to before. We picked Firehouse Subs. This place was cool because they had good food but even more important they are very conscious about helping local firefighters. You can donate your change from your order to the rounded up dollar amount to give. Also they sell 5 gallon buckets for a two dollar donation. I really dig this place. I was so filled by the sub I didn't get a chance to start my brownie.
Along the way to the caverns I started doubting if I should go or not. I voiced my concern to Aimee and Chuck and ALL OF A SUDDEN a road sign for the town of STANLEY appeared at the next traffic light. I needed no further convincing.
We went into the caverns and had a great tour. What I found there that connected me to my shamanic journey (earlier post) is personal. But I highly recommend this place for a good stop during a trip and being 165 feet in the earth really is a great way to resonate with nature.
When we were back in TN Gabe offered the group some nuts....and chocolate after the shamanic journey to help end our meditation. Oddly enough we had some brownie that I didn't even touch from the sub shop to end our literal journey. The universe has spoken.
As we left Aimee said she wanted to get a picture of the STANLEY sign. I told her that we weren't headed back in the same direction so we would miss seeing it (boo hoo). But I missed a turn and had to make a U-Turn. When we got back on the road...there it was a LURAY CAVERN, STANLEY & FRONT ROYAL sign right next to us. Thanks universe

So, it's been a few days since the post gathering, and almost a week since the main event. I've stayed clear of a computer since that time except for a few updates here or there. That said let me express in a few words the impact of The Gathering for me.
#1) Renewal - I found myself letting go of old pains, embracing new friendships, rekindling fires from my distant family.
#2) Strengthening - I found myself lending and gaining strength from others in the mental, physical, and spiritual arts of the Jedi Path.
#3) New Forgings - I found myself forging new bonds, meeting new friends, and even taking on new experiences I shied away from in the past.
#4) Expression - I found for me the opportunity to express my soul to my dearest of friends, to show them how much I love each and every one of them, and to share with them a bit of heart.
#5) Empowerment - I found the truth I had wondered about for so long. I now know it to be true, so long as there is one life for me to defend my strength is limitless even up to the exhaustion of my mortal body.
#6) Pride - I had the greatest of gifts of being proud in others. Pride in my fellow Knights newly knighted. Pride in the strength I have gained from fighting for others. Pride in my apprentice. Pride in my peers. Pride in what we stand for. These are things worth having pride in.
The details of the Gatherings others have posted on, so I took this time to instead talk there in short order the impact on me instead of the nature of events.
Thank you all, may the Force Guide and Protect you!

They are reaching out with their feelings, attempting to make telepathic contact with the psychic energy of the universe, to link brainwaves through that great cosmic consciousness they call the Force. |
